As long as you have explicit permission from the band, it's fine to use Community Audio for your recording. However, we can place all manner of restrictions on uploads to a given collection. For example, Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek consented to have exactly two shows - no more, no less - to her collection: http://www.archive.org/details/SaraWatkins

So if a band isn't comfortable having more than one show up, that's perfectly fine. A collection can be just one show - in terms of being searchable, it's probably better to be in the LMA collection than in Community Audio, because that way you get the band collection page, which can have links, images, a bio, etc.

Thanks greenone. I totally agree that a LMA collection is the best way to go, for all the reasons you state. Comfort or restrictions aren’t considerations in my case. I sometimes record opening acts and want an easy way to share the recording with the band and their fans on their facebook page, and much prefer linking to an archiveshow page, rather than using some sharing app.

When using Community Audio, what would be the appropriate manner to denote permission from the band? I notice some folks list the CCO 1.0 Universal public domain on their pages, but I don’t have a good grasp of what that really means.

If you must use CA to post your recordings, please post the artist permission text (to the degree that you are able to obtain it) in the notes field. Do not use any of the CC licenses, since they are only able to be applied by the rights-holders. If you apply public domain, you are releasing ANY copyright claims to the files.

Thanks for bearing with me as it finally sinks in; I am looking at a yousendit or some such account.
I imagine that once they hear a good live recording (and my spiel about the significance of LMA) a band would want to have a collection here!

As a third voice here, may I say something? This has been discussed in my case, regarding my very old vintage recordings. Many of the best artists I taped are deceased. I have no easy ways to contact them for their permission to create a LMA collection for them. You do. I've written here extensively about what I did, and why. And I still took some bashing for "circumventing the LMA." Some artists I contacted, and I created LMA collections. Some artists are deceased or unavailable, and I created Community Audio items. Copy / paste your "stipulations" ("I sometimes record opening acts and want an easy way to share the recording with the band and their fans on their facebook page, and much prefer linking to an archiveshow page, rather than using some sharing app."); circulate this email to the bands you're taping; on a case-by-case basis, have each band email your permission to etree AT archive.org; this will create collections on the LMA. As the administrator, you can go into each item and edit, modify, delete, add, exchange or remove files. Each band controls the permissions and stipulations, which are open to any / all restrictions and permissions, and are changeable by email. Use of Community Audio Collections "by tapers" for contemporary tapes of live music, in order to blatantly circumvent the LMA, is something a lot of people will be taking notice of. Some people will copy what you are doing; others will lambast you for what you are doing. I regret the former, I encourage the latter.

I’m not quite sure how to take your post Monte, but I'll assume your statements are for the general good of the archive. I can assure you (and anyone else) that I am not trying to “blatantly circumvent the LMA.” Any recording I make is with the explicit permission of band and venue, and even then I would only upload a recording after securing permission from the band to do so. My question is how to best display such permission on a CA page, or if that is actually necessary.

I fully comprehend the preference for (and value of) a LMA collection, and should a band that I record so wish, I am glad to assist them in getting one started.
